    Question Help finding winter gear

    Direct Mail Posts1
I am trying to find some good sources for some winter clothing like those mentioned in This Thread. The local outdoor sporting goods store gave me great suggestions for what would work well for long underwear and showed me the products, but they were all out of my size in everything! I haven't been able to locate another place intown to find these items.

Does anybody know of a good online supplier for clothing like this that wont break the bank?

    Mostly I am looking for:
    1. Long underpants like under armour or Patagonia (as were recommended to me) or something else that you all can recommend to keep me warmer but breath easily enough that I don't burn up inside or in my car between stops and wont hinder my mobility.
    2. Glove liners to use under my unger gloves. (Do I really need to pay 8$ each pair like the ones that were recommended to me?) I was hoping to get several cheap pairs and rotate them out like MyWindowMan does (in this thread).
    3. Wool/Hybrid socks.

I am a total noob to winter gear and I appreciate any of your sources and suggestions. Last year, winter was nothing like it is this year, and its kicking my rear ! I guess i'm still a winter wuss

I find much of my winter clothing at a few places. Look at a sporting goods store or a Ace hardware. I found good thermal lined jeans (Ryder) at my local Menards home improvement store.

I like REI. If there is not one local to you check out their website at rei.com.

Their brand is a bit less expensive than the name brands like Patagonia. Good stuff ain't always cheap, but it's worth investing in some quality Winter gear.

If you are a member of REI you get an annual refund of 10% back on all eligible purchases.

I love Patagonia products. While appearing to be expensive compared to other brands, their items last a very long time. I've even sent worn or damaged items to their Reno service center for repair, and they have returned a new, like-for-like substitute. I have some Patagonia jackets that look new after 15+ years.

    1) Patagonia has 4 levels of Capilene underwear for varying temperatures. I run warm, so Cap 1 suits me. Warm and wicking.
    2) I use Mountain Hardware synthetic liners when temperatures are under ~30°. Easy on-and-off for my neoprene, waterproof gloves, and warm.
    3) I like Patagonia Lightweight Hiking Crew Socks or Smartwool Nordic Lights.

I purchased a Carhartt Waterproof Breathable jacket (they also have matching pants) yesterday at a local surplus store to replace an older North Face boarding jacket -- used it today in a cold downpour with excellent results. I have found Carhartt gear in general to be sturdy and warm.

BTW, supporting a local store actually does trickle-down to your community (though I do purchase my share of online products as needed.)

Dickies usually have some pretty good deals in clearance section, and if you search Dikies promotion codes you can usually get 20-30% extra discount

Don't be cheap with the winter gear. I buy Smartwool socks (20 bucks a pair) and they last a long time. Look for an REI or ski/snowboard shop for underwear. Burton, Solomon, and all the other big brands make quality tech stuff. I wear Arcterix rain gear and I love it. It's stupid expensive (I get a family rate) but their 3-ply Gortex is the cats ass. Slim cut and pockets high to accommodate a harness. Ski stuff is the way to go and you get an actual warranty that they will honour without any fuss.

    Default Liners

One thing you can do for liners is the little stretchy gloves that you can find in most drug stores. If your going to have your glove off for more than a couple of minutes try to get it as close to your body as you can, that way its not so cold when you go to put it back on.
